How to use Encrypted Messenger 2.0

 

How to start Encrypted Messenger

Start em2 (Encrypted Messenger 2) via the start menu.  It can be found at the following location “Start/Programs/johnyTech/Encrypted Messenger 2.0.” 

If you get a message telling you that there is already an instance of Encrypted Messenger running, then you did not need to start it.

 

How to use Encrypted Messenger

            (Assuming Encrypted Messenger is running)

Begin a chat conversation.  You will an add-on window below your chat window. 


Both of you will need Encrypted Messenger running to send and receive secure Instant Messages. 

To turn it on, simply check Enable Encryption. 

Type in the text area and press [Enter] or the [Send button with the lock icon].

 


This will encrypt you message and send it to your contact via IM.  They will receive it encrypted, and Encrypted Messenger will decrypt the message on their computer. 

 


Advanced Features of Encrypted Messenger

            How to change the password:

1)      Click the Green [More] Button. 

2)      You will see this:

3)      Click the Green [Show Options] Button to expand one more time.

4)      You will see this:

5)      Change [Your Agreed Upon Password] to the password BOTH you and the person you are chatting with will using.  

6)      The passwords must be the exact same.  (Uppercase and lowercase of each letter must match)

 

How to use totally random passwords.

1)      Click [Enable Encryption] to turn it on if it is not already checked.

2)      Make sure the other person is there and has Encrypted Messenger.

a.       This is best accomplished by sending the following IM:

                                                                                                   i.      Joe, do you have encrypted messenger 2?

                                                                                                 ii.      Sue, yes I do, I love it.

                                                                                                iii.      Joe, I am going to start a random password key exchange please stand by.

                                                                                               iv.      Sue, ok

3)      At this point Joe should click the “Secure Random Key Exchange”

a.       Joe’s computer will send the beginning of the random key exchange.

b.      Sue’s computer will send that it is ready for step 2

c.       Joe’s will send the final step, and then you are done.

d.     

e.       It is important to wait until these three messages have been sent with out interruption.

f.        If something messed up along the way, the easiest thing to do is to close your conversation windows, reopen them, and try again.
